Banishing panic: Harriet Martineau and the popularization of political economy

In the first three decades of the 19th century, a number of British liberal intellectuals wrote tracts, stories and treatises to popularize the "laws" of classical political economy and to assuage growing unease with the economy. Harriet Martineau's "Illustrations of Political Economy" is discussed.
