Nourishing Lineage in the Earliest French Versions of the Roman de Mélusine

This article analyzes how the earliest French versions of the Roman de Mélusine represent and develop the theme of lineage and family heritage.
Written by Jean d’Arras in the late 14th century, the Roman de Mélusine tells the story of a beautiful fairy woman who can transform into a serpent, and who is betrayed by her human husband.

The article argues that the tale is not just about love and betrayal, but also serves as a reflection of medieval cultural and social values—especially regarding the importance of family, ancestry, and noble lineage.

The Mélusine legend became one of the most well-known stories in medieval French literature and has deep roots in folklore and cultural memory.
