A Treasure Story: Thomas Baines’s ‘Map to the Gold Fields of South Eastern Africa’ 1877

The Gold Regions of South Eastern Africa, first published in 1877 (posthumously for Baines), offers a detailed account of gold‑bearing areas of southeastern Africa — notably the region between the Limpopo and the Zambezi rivers, including what is now Zimbabwe, Transvaal, and the Cape Colony. The work includes a large folding map (“Map of the Gold Fields of South Eastern Africa” 1876) and smaller inset map of the Cape Colony. Inside are textual descriptions — journey routes, geography, mining localities, indigenous peoples, natural environment — as well as prospecting information, mining potential, and practical notes for would‑be gold seekers. The book documents Baines’s travels and exploration efforts, describing old diggings (e.g. in “Hartley Hills”), quartz reefs, alluvial gold fields, and early mining communities. It also situates these goldfields in the broader colonial and exploratory context of 19th‑century southern Africa — combining cartography, travel narrative, natural history, and colonial-era mining ambitions.
