Because students recorded notes and reflections in their wilderness journals, they also drew pictures to illuminate their understandings of place and history. Jason, however, reunited with his brothers and started a new life with them in Alaska. Because of these and other parallels between Buck and Jason, a key objective we had for the eighth graders was to examine the characterization of each protagonist. Students could understand nature, man, and circumstances that precipitated events in the novel.
