23 English eng Lopenzina, Drew Contributor <p data-start="27" data-end="242"><em data-start="27" data-end="99">“In de Dark Wood, No Indian Nigh”: William Apess and the “Indian Hymn”</em> examines how <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline">William Apess</span> used hymnody, Native identity, and Christian discourse in early nineteenth-century America. The article focuses on the “Indian Hymn,” a hymn associated with Native religious performance and oral tradition, and analyzes how Apess adapted Christian forms to express Indigenous experience, survival, and critique of white American society.
