23 English eng Stevens, Scott Manning Contributor <p><em data-start="20" data-end="79">Tomahawk: Materiality and Depictions of the Haudenosaunee</em> examines the tomahawk as both a cultural object and a symbol of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) people. The article analyzes how tomahawks were used in daily life, diplomacy, and warfare, while also exploring how Europeans portrayed them in colonial texts and images. The author argues that these depictions often reflected colonial stereotypes that associated Indigenous peoples with violence and “savagery.” By studying the material and symbolic meanings of the tomahawk, the article highlights the differences between Indigenous interpretations and colonial representations.
