23 English eng Holt, Keri Contributor <p>This article explores the idea of <span data-start="174" data-end="219">American federalism and national identity</span> in <em data-start="223" data-end="245">The Algerine Captive</em>, an early American novel by Royall Tyler. It argues that the novel presents a vision of the United States as a unified nation in which citizens should regard every state as part of a common homeland. Through the protagonist's travels within America and his captivity in North Africa, the novel examines themes of regional diversity, national unity, citizenship, and belonging.
