The article reflects on the difficulty—and at times refusal—of reading the works of William Faulkner from a critical perspective shaped by race, gender, and power. Rather than simply analyzing Faulkner’s texts, the author foregrounds the reader’s position, arguing that reading is not neutral. For some readers—especially those marginalized by race or gender—Faulkner’s representation of Southern white masculinity can be alienating, oppressive, or even resistant to interpretation.
