That Marooned Thing: Adoptive Narratives for a Haudenosaunee Purging Stick by Steffi Dippold studies a Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) purging stick — one of the earliest Indigenous North American objects collected by the British Museum. The article investigates how an Indigenous artifact became separated from its original cultural context through colonial collection and museum archiving. Because official records about the object are incomplete and biased, Dippold uses what she calls “adoptive narratives” — speculative and interdisciplinary interpretations built from colonial travel writings, medical accounts, museum records, and Indigenous knowledge.
