Mississippian Contexts for Early American Studies highlights the importance of the Mississippian civilization in understanding early American history. The article argues that traditional scholarship often begins American history with European colonization while overlooking the complex Indigenous societies that existed beforehand. It examines the political, economic, and cultural networks of the Mississippian world and their long-term influence across North America. The author encourages scholars to place early American history within broader Indigenous contexts rather than focusing only on Europeans. The study also contributes to decolonizing historical interpretation and expanding the scope of Early American Studies. In addition, it stresses the value of archaeology and Indigenous knowledge in reinterpreting the past.
