Native Continuities in Colonial Mexico examines how Indigenous peoples in colonial Mexico preserved and adapted their cultural traditions despite Spanish colonization. The article argues that Native communities maintained important elements of their social structures, beliefs, languages, and practices while also responding to colonial pressures. Rather than portraying Indigenous culture as completely destroyed, the study highlights continuity, resilience, and adaptation across the colonial period. It also explores interactions between Native and Spanish systems in religion, politics, and everyday life. The article contributes to a more complex understanding of colonial history by centering Indigenous experiences and agency.
