"The Signifying Monkey": Interdisciplinary Ripple Effects and Six Degrees of Separation

The article examines the broad influence of The Signifying Monkey by Henry Louis Gates Jr.. It explains how the concept of Signifyin(g)—a Black rhetorical tradition based on indirection, irony, parody, and reinterpretation—has shaped scholarship far beyond literary studies. The article shows how a concept rooted in African American folklore creates connections across disciplines. Through a "six degrees of separation" perspective, Signifyin(g) links folklore, literature, music, media, and contemporary digital culture.
