Bridging the Gulf: An Analysis of a Brazilian Translation of Faulkner's "The Wild Palms"

This article examines a Brazilian Portuguese translation of William Faulkner’s novel The Wild Palms. It explores how linguistic, cultural, and stylistic elements from the original English text are rendered into Brazilian Portuguese. The study discusses challenges in capturing Faulkner’s complex narrative voice, cultural nuances, and existential themes in translation. It also analyzes how norms and expectations from the target culture influence translation choices. Ultimately, the article highlights how translation serves as a bridge across cultural and linguistic divides, and how interpretive decisions shape readers’ understanding of the original work.
